Reaching Higher: The Final Send-off | Feb 22
A Note From Sarah Saleem:
Assalaamu Alaikum, my name is Sarah Saleem. I'm a Psychology graduate studying American Sign Language, aspiring to become an elementary school teacher inshaAllah. I’ve always loved sports, hiking and reaching higher in every aspect of life. Why not integrate my passion for hiking with something people can benefit from?
Through Human Appeal, a well known UK based charity, I will be trekking to reach the summit of the highest free standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to provide Syrian refugee children with quality education, InshAllah.
Due to the war in Syria, over 400,000 lives have been lost. Vulnerable children are most affected by this war. Children are born in refugee camps and many have never even seen a school.
Hijabi Ballers’ vision to create opportunities for Muslim women to thrive through sport and wellness and to reach higher has been an inspiration. I want to use what I am capable of to try and create a platform for the Syrian refugee children who have sadly been forgotten due to the chaos in the rest of the world.
I’m reaching higher, it’s your turn now. The Reaching Higher campaign is meant to provide everyone with the opportunity to support this cause-whether it’s by donating, sharing or dropping in for an event.
May Allah accept from us all, Ameen.
Sarah Saleem
Reaching Higher
Hijabi Ballers represents a number of things: being a Muslim female, being an athlete, and being a boss. The word 'baller', an umbrella term for all athletes, holds a strong connotation of being a boss, being successful and being bold.
As a non-profit organization, Hijabi Ballers strives to create opportunities for Muslim girls and women to engage in sport, through a variety of ways. Reaching Higher is the organization's first ever charity campaign. Sarah Saleem’s passion to reach higher and help give Syrian refugee children the opportunity to go to school is the inspiration behind this meaningful project. Inshallah, she will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for this cause!
Leading up to Sarah's climb, Hijabi Ballers will be hosting various sports clinics across the Greater Toronto Area, including Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. Each event requests a suggested donation of $30 per person, 100% of which will go towards Sarah’s cause. The events will be facilitated in gyms and fitness centres across the GTA, who are passionate about helping grow opportunities for Muslim females in sports. Each event will be run by local leaders in sport and wellness, who you will have an opportunity to connect with and meet as part of the experience. Each clinic will also feature exciting raffle prizes, which are included in the price of the ticket as well as Hijabi Ballers merch for you to buy!
Follow us as we announce the dates for each clinic, taking place throughout January and February 2020, ranging from basketball, to fitness to martial arts and more.
