Ready to take your skating to the next level? Following our weekly open house sessions, Hijabi Ballers—in partnership with The Neighbourhood Organization (TNO) and Muslimah Athletic Club (MAC)—is bringing you Rookie Skates Shinny!

Shinny is a fun, low-pressure, casual ice hockey environment designed for women and girls to play, learn, and grow their hockey skills together. Our goal is to form set teams, assign team captains, and play weekly games across full ice—giving you the chance to sharpen your game under the supportive supervision and guidance of certified coaches.

Program Details

• Dates: Friday nights, October 23, 2026 – February 5, 2027

  (Note: No sessions on December 25, 2026 or January 1, 2027)

• Ice Time: 10:00 PM – 10:30 PM (Full Ice)

• Location: Angela James Arena (165 Grenoble Dr, North York, ON)

• Format: Casual shinny scrimmages, set teams, team captains, and weekly game play with coach supervision.

• Cost: 100% Free

• Eligibility: Women and girls (all skill levels welcome, from beginners learning hockey basics to experienced players looking for casual ice time).

• Requirements: Pre-registration is strictly required to participate (no walk-ins for shinny to ensure balanced rosters and ice safety).

What to Expect

• Weekly Structured Scrimmages: Play in friendly, organized 30-minute full-ice games with dedicated teams and captains.

• Skill Growth & Coaching: Receive tips, encouragement, and skill development directly from certified coaches on the bench and ice.

• Culturally Safe Space: A welcoming, women-only environment focused on community, teamwork, and fun.

• Equipment: Bring your own skates, hockey stick, and CSA-approved helmet (with a cage/visor recommended). Limited rental skates, sticks and helmets are available on a first-come, first-served basis from 8:30 PM to 9:40pm.
